County seeks legal opinion on Scenic View

Although some may relish in the old saying, “silence is golden,” especially when applied to the brewing ownership controversy over Scenic View Road, others may also refer to another adage – “talk is cheap.”  Talk is something both sides seem to have been doing a lot of lately, according to county attorney Scott Pederson.

Scenic View Road ownership remains in limbo

  A resolution regarding Scenic View Road continues to elude Prairie County commissioners as the one predominate question remains unanswered – who owns Scenic View Road? At least 60 county residents attended a two-hour long public meeting held at the county courthouse Tuesday morning to discuss the issue with the commission and representatives from state and federal agencies.

  As the summer season approaches, county commissioners continue to weigh options regarding access to Scenic View Road which leads to about 26 sections of public lands owned and maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, designated as the Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area.

Our silence will ensure loss to Terry Badlands

  There is no doubt, the Scenic View outlook provides an amazing view of eastern Montana badlands and is a Prairie County gem. It’s a place residents have taken friends and family, both in and out-of-state, to show off the hidden beauty of our county. From early morning drives to late afternoon picnics, residents have always known Scenic View is available to them. That is, until recently.

Gate placed on Scenic View Road

A gate was recently installed on Scenic View Road by landowner, Michael Karrels within the past couple of months. The road, which leads to the Terry Badlands, runs through portions of deeded land owned by Karrels as well as land owned and maintained by the Bureau of Land Management 
Currently, due to the placement of the gate, which straddles a cattle guard, one must cross over half of the cattle guard in order to open the gate.
