Public meeting will discuss bridge work

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is conducting a public meeting to discuss a proposal to rehabilitate the bridge over the Yellowstone River, located approximately one mile north of Terry, Montana (reference marker 1) on Secondary Highway 253 in Prairie County.  The meeting will start at 6:00 pm on January 12, 2010 at the Prairie Community Center, 112 South Garfield in Terry.

Community participation is a very important part of the process, and the public is encouraged to attend. Opinion, comments and concerns may also be submitted in writing at the meeting, by mail to Ray Mengel, Glendive District Administrator, at MDT's Glendive district office at PO Box 890, Glendive, MT 59330-0890, or online at
Please indicate comments are for project CN 6838 and submit comments by February 5, 2010.
Proposed work includes adding a bridge span of approximately 60 feet to the south end of the existing structure.  The additional span will be built to current standards and match the width of the existing two-lane bridge.  The highway will be temporarily closed in order to complete the construction of the new span and approaches.  Available options/time limits for the temporary road closure will be discussed at the public meeting. Design and construction methods will be used in order to minimize the duration of this closure.  MDT's intent is to use rapid construction techniques in order to limit traffic disruption.
The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the bridge, as well as, enhance travel safety.
Construction is tentatively planned for 2012, depending on completion of design and availability of funds. If new right-of way and relocation of utilities are required, MDT staff will contact all affected landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.
