Lady Long Rider returns

Bernice Ende, of Trego, Mont., is on her eighth long ride in less than 10 years — and is loving every mile of her current 8,000 mile trek. This time, Ende, who last traveled through Terry in October of 2010 after returning from a two-year, 6,000- mile jaunt across the United States, is just beginning her journey. Leaving the northwest corner of Montana April 1, Ende said she has been averaging about 30 miles a day.
“That’ll stop when the heat comes up,” Ende said with a broad smile.
She plans on riding to Maine and wintering on the east coast in 2015 before heading west through Canada coast-to-coast, returning home in 2016.
Minus her faithful canine companion, Ende’s team looks fairly similar from 2010, which includes Essie Pearl, a 12-year-old Fjord mare and Montana Spirit, a five-year-old Fjord/Percheron mare.
While in Terry, the long rider’s stops included the hardware store, post office, library and Terry Tribune office.
Full of independent spirit and the idealism of returning to America’s roots of traveling, Ende expressed enthusiasm for her unorthodox mode of transportation.
