A body was discovered near the Prairie/Custer county line on a gravel bar in the Yellowstone River on Saturday and has been taken to Billings for identification.
A 911 call made by an agate hunter was received shortly after 12 pm, according to Prairie County Sheriff Bill Klunder, who responded to the initial report. After discovering the body was about 100 yards outside the county line, Klunder called Custer County officials.
Custer County Undersheriff Pat Roos said the body could be that of 19-year-old Eddie Whittenberg of Miles City. Whittenberg was a passenger in a Nov. 28 car accident that occurred in Miles City where the vehicle Whittenberg was riding in went into the river. The driver, 17-year-old Sean Tatum and another passenger made it shore.
Tatum has been charged as an adult with with felony negligent homicide and felony criminal endangerment.
Dental records will be used to identify the body, Roos said.
