Tanning business nears one-year mark

Approaching its first-year anniversary, Shawna Christofferson, owner of Soaking up the Sun Tanning, says she’s enjoying her new business venture. The doors to the tanning salon first opened last June.

“There was nowhere to tan in Terry,” Christofferson said. “I wanted people to have somewhere to go (to tan.)”
Located next to New Image Salon in the back room of the Gaub building on Logan Avenue, Christofferson explained customers must initially fill out a questionnaire before tanning.
Once skin type is determined, customers are allowed up to 15 minutes on the 24-bulb bed, which sits behind enclosed portable walls. Some choose a full body tan, while others opt to tan only their legs, Christofferson explained.
Regarding safety concerns with using a tanning bed, Christofferson emphasized the importance of not receiving over-exposure. The UV lights also provide an energy boost for those who use the bed, she said.
Christofferson, a 2007 graduate of Terry High School, lives in Terry with husband Nathan, who is employed as a boiler technician for Prairie Community Hospital.
