Austyn Copp and Layne Lantis captured individual titles on Saturday at the Eastern A Classic in Sidney. Copp led the Lady Red Devils to a second place team finish. Lantis and the Red Devil boys placed third as a team. The DCHS cross country teams will now head to Helena for the state meets this Saturday.

“Sidney had a very tough course,” Coach Jim Temple said. “The athletes had two long hills that proved difficult for most of the athletes … two that didn’t seem effected of course were Layne Lantis and Austyn Copp. Both of those athletes ran their personal bests. I know the course was right at 3 miles because I measured it! When I heard how fast both of them ran I just about fell over … those are phenomenal times.”
Copp had her best race of the season, narrowly beating Adree Shield of Hardin. Just a week earlier at the Miles City Invite, Copp was fifth while Shield won that race. Copp’s winning time of 18:58.58 was just a second ahead of Shield (18:59.69)
Lantis blew away the field to win the boys’ race. Lantis ran the thee-mile course in 15:35.60, winning by more than 20 seconds. Tyler Mogan of Laurel was second at 15:58.58.
Lantis will now head to Helena as one of the top ranked runners in Class A.
Laurel won both of the girls’ and the boys’ team titles. The Lady Locomotives squeaked out a win over the Lady Red Devils by just five points. Billings Central finished third. Hardin and Glendive were 2nd
and 3rd respectively in the boys’ competition.
Caitlin Lantis and Luke Hill both finished in the Top 10 for DCHS. Caitlin finished 6th in the girls’ race with a time of 20:03.94. Hill ran the boys’ race in 17:20.52 to place 8th.
“It will be tough for either of our teams to be in the top 5 this year at the state meet, but that is always what we are shooting for. The girls will have both Rio Frame and Paitton Herbst this week. It is our hope that those two in the race will give us a little more strength than we had at the Eastern A Classic in Sidney. In the boys’ race, I think Layne Lantis has a real shot at being right in the front of the race. His goal all season is to be the state champion in cross country. It is a lofty goal, but one I believe he can achieve.” said Temple.
Girls’ team scores: Laurel 50, DCHS 55, Billings Central 62, Hardin 66, Miles City 103, Sidney 153
Boys’ team scores: Laurel 41, Hardin 44, DCHS 59, Billings Central 115, Miles City 124, Sidney 139
Boys’ Top 5: L. Lantis (DCHS) – 15:35.60, T. Mogan (Laurel) - 15:58.58, L. Weidler (Laurel) – 16:53.73, H. Harrison (Blgs. Central) – 16:55.52, Ware (Hardin) – 16:59.99.
